Some trees, such as poplar, spread by means of suckers that arise from their roots. Suckering from these trees is actually more profuse once the parent tree is removed. Because poplar suckers originate from a common parent plant, they share a vascular system.

Hi Jim, I have been having problems with young Box Elder tree suckers...they grow up about 10 to 20 feet in one season, I cut them down to the ground and they just come back. Is there somthing I can hammer into the stump to kill them?

Suckers will continue to sprout as long as the roots remain alive. If you keep cutting the suckers down (before they produce leaves), the roots will eventually run out of energy and will suckers will cease to sprout. ... Up till the recent gales, I had a Sumac tree next to the lawn. The winds finally defeated it :(; Now all that is left is a small stump. However the root system is throwing up small saplings (suckers?) through the garden and lawn.

Re: Killing Tree Roots Once and For All ... Wouldn't it be dormant now, being a deciduous tree? If so there's probably no benefit doing anything with herbicides until spring when the roots become active again. You could also try a stump gel to prevent suckers from coming up.
