It is catty-corner. See this explanation of how the expression comes from cater-cornered. However, in fairness to your upstate NY friends (and my mother, who hailed from Troy, NY), this term does have many spellings and pronounciations.

What about catty-corner vs. kitty-corner? These Michigan freaks use kitty-corner and it drives me nuts. (FYI: both terms are incorrect as the correct term is cater-corner, but at least catty-corner sounds pretty close to the correct term).
