Knurled surfaces are commonly seen on cylindrical parts such as handles, knobs and rollers. Knurling is a process that creates a pleasing, easy-to-grip geometric pattern on a part's surface.

Knurling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Knurling is a manufacturing process, typically conducted on a lathe, whereby a visually-attractive diamond-shaped (criss-cross) pattern is cut or rolled into metal. This pattern allows hands or finge...

Knurling Do's and Don'ts? ... By forming a deeper, wider impression on the first revolution, the die teeth are more likely to "step" back into the initial grooves the second time around." So...there is obviously a bit of slop associated with the forming process to allow the "stepping" to occur on each revolution.

The knurling process is considered finished when the peaks or points of the diamonds straight lines are fully sharp. Further advancing of the cross slide is futile at this stage as the pattern of the knurl has penetrated as far as is ever going to penetrate.

The above-described contact knurling process is acceptable for relatively thick high modulus films (0.002 inch and above); it is unsuitable for thinner gauge films. The rotating knurling and rubber wheels typically introduce a stress gradient across the width of the film.

The second knurling process, referred to as cut knurling, is performed by orienting the knurling wheel relative to the workpiece such that the wheel cuts a pattern into the workpiece by removing metal chips. Cutting knurl holders and cutting knurl wheels are available from Dorian Tool International, Houston, Tex.

The literature to date has merely studied how to realize a good and consistent knurl, but no predictive models of the knurling process have been presented. This paper applies two competing data mining techniques, regression analysis and artificial neural networks, to develop a predictive model of the knurling process.

I believe the reason home-shoppers fuss over the knurling process so much is they aren't using the correct knurling tools. I mean, have you ever tried to make a decent knurl on a light duty machine using one of those side infeed knurl heads that need umpteen passes to come to depth?
