The photograph on the bottom shows a closer view of this lateral moraine. The difference in the color of the moraine deposits is most likely due to the degree of weathering: the yellower material has been exposed longer than the grayer material.

Lateral Moraine: unconsolidated material deposited along the sides of an alpine glacier. Lateral moraines may form on top of existing alpine glaciers along the sides of the valley walls. Freeze-thaw weathering results in debris falling on top of the glacial ice, forming a ridge.

Moraine—smaller rocks and soil—are deposited at the terminus of the glacier. Moraine is also deposited on either side of the glacier. This type of moraine is called lateral moraine. When two glaciers merge and end in one terminus, a swath of moraine can be seen running down the center of the glacier.
