Leptothrix bacteria can vegetatively grow within filaments under the right conditions or grow to form filamentous swarmer cells. These filaments can form sheaths (much like the tubular sheaths that encase the rod-shaped Sphaerotilus bacteria) that may appear yellow, dark brown, or colorless.
