If leucaena makes up half the animals diet, problems result due to mimosine (3–5 percent, on a dry-weight basis, of the protein). Heating the leaves or adding ferrous sulfate reduces the mimosine or its toxicity.

Leucaena leucocephala is a 'conflict tree' being widely promoted for tropical forage production and reforestation, whilst at the same time it is spreading naturally and is widely reported as a weed. This thornless tree can form dense monospecific thickets and is difficult to eradicate once established.

Leucaena leucocephala, formerly known as L. glauca, is a thornless long-lived shrub or tree which may grow to heights of 7-18 m. Leaves are bipinnate with 6-8 pairs of pinnae bearing 11-23 pairs of leaflets 8-16 mm long.
