Although Leyland cypress can be sheared into a tall screen on small lots, it is most effective when allowed to develop into its natural shape. Regular trimming is necessary to retain a formal hedge, screen or windbreak.

A: Leyland Cypress is hardy to Zone 6. It is a pyramidal tree, to 30-40 feet tall and 25 to 30 feet wide which makes it good for tall screen. It is graceful, somewhat open habit of growth. Give ample room, to allow for symmetry of growth.

I purchased 10 Leyland Cypress trees for a screen in my back yard. In a little over a year they have virtually covered the view of the house behind mine and are growing so fast that soon the utility wires that are run on the backs of the property line will not be visable by next year.
