Most of the men in New France were farmers. Life was very hard for the farmer. He was the one who was responsible for producing food. He had to farm and also hunt to get food for his family. Taking care of his farm and family was his number one job.

Canada’s story began about 450 years ago when explorers from France began coming to North America. Soon more people from France came and began to farm and build small towns. They gave the name New France to this part of Quebec.

The pivot of social life in New France was the settlement at Quebec. This was the colonial capital, the seat of the governor and of the council, the only town in the colony large enough to have all the trappings and tinsel of a well-rounded social set.
