In each antenna complex specific molecules of chlorophyll a activate the light reactions. All the other pigment molecules absorb light energy and transfer that energy to the reaction center.

The Light Independent Process (or Dark Reactions) occurs when the products of the Light Reaction are used to form C-C covalent bonds of carbohydrates. The Dark Reactions can usually occur in the dark, if the energy carriers from the light process are present.

Photosystem I and II and the Light Reaction This means that all other pigments will pass the light energy through resonance until it reaches the reaction center. Its reaction center , a molecule called P700, absorbs light of 700 nm maximally.

In the photosynthetic light reactions, energy of light is conserved as as "high energy" phosphoanhydride bonds of ATP, and as reducing power of NADPH. The proteins and pigments responsible for the photosynthetic light reaction are associated with the thylakoid (grana disk) membranes.

The light reaction occurs inside the chloroplast in the photosynthetic membrane. The first step in photosynthesis is the absorption of photons from the sun by Photosystem II . The photons are then used to excite an electron to the next level where it is accepted by a primary electron acceptor.

Energy trapped by these light reactions is used to power the biosynthetic phase that follows. The bulk of atmospheric oxygen comes about as a by-product of the photosynthetic light reaction in chlorophyll plants.

The product of the reaction is a six-carbon intermediate which immediately splits in half to form two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate. In phase 2 ( Reduction), ATP and NADPH2 from the light reactions are used to convert 3-phosphoglycerate to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, the three-carbon carbohydrate precursor to glucose...
