Linear foot you'd use e.g. when buying cloth off a roll - 4 linear feet would be 4 feet unrolled and cut off. 4 feet in one direction. Lineal is to do with heredity so the two are not interchangeable. You couldn't say "Lineal Foot" unless you were talking about say a genetic deformity that gives you 14 toes.
