In the twentieth century, Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem showed that no explicit list of axioms sufficiently large for ordinary mathematics could be both (1) complete (i.e. every statement can be either proved or disproved) and (2) consistent (i.e. no statement can be both proved and disproved).

This is the "informal" version of the axioms as found in a high school text Basic Geometry by Birkhoff and Beatley (abbreviated B&B). In that text these Axioms are called Principles 1-5. There is another more sophisticated version published in a mathematics journal for mathematicians.
