I believe that when the tests are done, it is tested for high risk which is a group of many different strains, and low risk which is another group of many different strains. Simply detecting "any HPV" or "high-risk HPV-positive" is not sufficient because infection by multiple strains multiplies the risk. Furthermore, the infectious status of the partner influences the amount of exposure, and the risk of development of cervical cancer.
