Albedo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The albedo of an object is the extent to which it diffusely reflects light from light sources such as the Sun. It is therefore a more specific form of the term reflectivity. Albedo is defined as the...

Because much of the land surface and oceans are dark in color, they have a low albedo. They absorb a large amount of the solar energy that gets to them, reflecting only a small fraction of it. Forests have low albedo, near 0.15. Snow and ice, on the other hand, are very light in color.

A substance with a low albedo reflects very little incoming radiation. In fact, the object absorbs much of the energy. Three examples of substances with a low albedo include forests, concrete and dirt. All else being equal, temperatures will be warmer over a low albedo surface than over a high albedo surface.

Analysis of data acquired by the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) instrument led to the identification of two distinct surface types.“Surface type 1,” lying mostly within southern low-albedo terrain, is likely to be composed of basalt.
