A low WBC count may mean there is a bone marrow problem either from chronic disease or from drugs like AZT or ganciclovir. Tuberculosis, histoplasmosis, and other fungal diseases may also cause bone marrow problems such as "cytopenia" or low cell counts.

I have had a low WBC for about 8 years. It has measured as low as 2.7, currently at 3.2. All other counts, Absolute Neut, Lymph, Mono, EOS,and Basophils are also in the low end of the standard. There appears to be no known reason.
