Reading the Visa Waiver program notes, the passport does have to be a machine readable and it shows an image of what one could look like. I have just called the US Consulate in Barcelona who told me that since October 2004 one requires a machine readable passport to gain entry to the US. Unfortunately the UK Consulate in Las Palmas is unable to describe a machine readable version and the line to the consulate in Madrid is permanently occupied.
