In non-macro situations Ne is the same as the marked f-number. ... which shows that the distant background point will be fuzzed out in direct proportion to the focal length. (See the lens tutorial for some graphs that may make this more intuitive.)

If it does not, which is particularly common in wide angle lenses, use the front diameter and note that the formulas for bellows correction and depth of field will not be correct at macro distances. Formulas that are exact even with this condition are given in the lens tutorial, posted separately.

For "Poppies Macro," I actually shot "through" some nearby flowers, so the out-of-focus splash of color in front would help frame the poppy in back. The foreground poppies were so close, in fact, that they almost touched the front of my lens.

With the Sea & Sea cameras, you press the macro lens over the standard lens (underwater!), then twist it to lock it in place. This lets you take standard photos and macro pictures on the same dive. (You can also attach a wide-angle lens underwater.) Shown at right is the Sea & Sea Seamaster Pro EX with a 2T macro set.
