The effect is called magnetostriction, and it is one of the magnetic properties which accompanies ferromagnetism. For 60 Hz applied magnetic fields in AC electrical devices such as transformers, the maximum length change happens twice per cycle, producing the familiar and sometimes annoying 120 Hz hum.

Magnetostriction is the changing of a material's physical dimensions in response to changing its magnetization. In other words, a magnetostrictive material will change shape when it is subjected to a magnetic field.

The engineering era of magnetostrictive materials began with the discovery of giant (1000’s of ppm) magnetostriction in rare earth alloys during the 1960’s by A.E. Clark and others. The culmination of research into a engineering alloy incorporating rare earth materials was Terfenol-D, a specially formulated allow...

Magnetostriction is a property of ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. When placed in a magnetic field, these materials change size and/or shape (see Figure 1). ... When a material has positive magnetostriction, it enlarges when placed in a magnetic field; with negative magnetostriction,

It is now clear that stress causes both reversible and irreversible changes in magnetisation, and that these changes are not directly related to magnetostriction [1]. However, this work points out that there is a perceivable connection between magnetostriction, stress and material permeability in constructional steel .

The relationship between coercivity (Hc) and magnetostriction (?Es) of the glassy Fe-(Al, Ga)-(P, C, B, Si) alloys has been discussed. The glassy Fe-(Al, Ga)-(P, C, B, Si) alloys exhibit lower Hc and lower Is compared with the conventional Fe-based amorphous alloys with the same ?Es and Fe content, respectively.
