How do you make hide glue?; Plan on taking 24 to 36 hours to make your glue. I find that works out to 2 or 3 full days. Scrape or sand your untanned (but dried) hide. I use the trimmings - dangles, the thick edges and irregular pieces on the hide after stretching, fleshing and all, just prior to tanning.

To make your hide glue look less refined you can add ochre pigments or a little dry dust. A touch of dull yellow and a touch of black iron oxide will make a nice brownish green that matches burned wood, the patina on some stones and patinated bone handle materials.

You can make hide glue by cutting rawhide into tiny pieces and cooking it gently with water until it becomes thick and vicsous. Strain it, pour it onto a metal sheet and alow it to dry. Then flake it off and pound the larger chunks down to a convenient size.

Regarding elasticity however, it is possible to make hot hide glue elastic by adding glycerin, but it also weakens the glue, as well. Occassionally though, you will need elasticity, as when assembling a tambour door.
