I just read online that you can make your own washing soda by changing the ph level in baking soda. Take the amount of needed baking soda spread on a cookie sheet and bake at 450 degrees for half an hour. If anyone else has tried this please let us know, thanks.

For really tough jobs, make a thick washing soda paste by mixing it with water, and then spread the paste on the soot. Keep the paste damp by spraying every hour or so with a spray bottle. Leave the paste on overnight, and then rinse.
