I rate each out of 10 on rate of spin, climb, catch-ability, turning circle & write the rating on the wing. From that I can throw and catch sometimes without moving a foot.

I make these boomerangs as a hobby and put far more time into each one than if it were a business. Why? ... This experiment consists of making a plywood boomerang and weighing the boomerang before and after each application of finish including sanding sealer, primer, acrylic latex colors, and water soluble polyurethane.

If you have little or no experience with boomerangs, don't think you're going to save 20 bucks by making your own. It takes practice. You can take my word for it (or find out for yourself) that it is much easier and economical in terms of time and construction materials to buy a boomerang than to make one.

Boomerangs are amazing! What seems to be a simple curved bit of wood can be thrown away from you and then come right back and land in your hand. Boomerangs use many laws of physics in their motion including ... A rough surface may affect the boomerangs flight pattern, making it less controllable and responsive.

Two people I know use the router alot when making boomerangs and they use them in different ways. Gary Broadbent uses a 45 degree camfering bit to cut the leading edges. He has this bit modified to get the bearing closer to the cutter, and eliminate the chance of the blank getting under the bearing.

1) it is relatively easy to work with, 2) there are now better quality plywood types available which are suitable for making boomerangs, and 3) it just somehow seems proper to make a boomerang out of wood (but maybe that's just the nostalgia talking.)
