Malachite green is a basic dye. Basic dyes are salts of the colored organic bases containing amino and imino groups and also combined with a colorless acid, such as hydrochloric or sulfuric. They are brilliant and most fluorescent among all synthetic dyes.

There is a mineral "Malachite" which is not the malachite you're interested in, this is an oxalate or zinc chloride salt that must be zinc-free (otherwise it is deadly toxic to fishes). Following are a few facts I've gleaned about this dye, in case they're useful - a lot more could be added. Name: Its hue is very similar to the mineral malachite green, and it is often stated that the name was given for its colour - it seems highly likely but I've never seen anyone add proof of the assertion.
