Margaret McMillan Nursery School opened officially in March 1991 with the amalgamation of Highgate Nursery School and the Hornsey Rise Children's Day Centre. As part of Islington's plans to extend and integrate services for young children and their families, the school offers nursery education to around 200 children.

Lady Astor, whose inspiration came from Rachel and Margaret McMillan, the pioneers of Nursery Education, opened the Margaret McMillan Nursery School in 1935. After visiting their nursery in Deptford, Lady Astor was anxious to set up a similar one in Plymouth and bought and converted 24 Hoe Street for this purpose.

Rachel McMillan was born in New York on 25th March, 1859. Her sister, Margaret McMillan, was born the following year on 20th July, 1860. Their parents, James and Jean McMillan, had originally come from Inverness but had emigrated to America in 1840. In 1865 James McMillan and his daughter Elizabeth died.
