I teach in Early Years and have always preferred to use the terms 'oblong' and 'square'. I accept 'rectangle' if children use this for an 'oblong'. I actually find that very young children get less confuse when naming their shapes - no longer muddling the terms 'triangle' and 'rectangle'.
