Meander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A meander in general is a bend in a sinuous watercourse. A meander is formed when the moving water in a river erodes the outer banks and widens its valley. A stream of any volume may assume a meand...

Rivers meander (twist and turn, as the river in the diagram) when they are traveling on top of a relatively flat surface. They do this, rather than flow in a straight line, because a straight line is not the most efficient path for water to flow. ... This meandering pattern moves downstream. Each loop of the river slowly...

In contrast to braided rivers, meandering rivers typically only contain one channel that winds its way across the floodplain. ...

Meandering rivers occur in all of the lowland regions of the Arctic, but they are commonest in the west, especially in the vicinity of the Mackenzie delta. These rivers are typically shallow and carry substantial amounts of fine sediments, which often colour their waters brown.

The pronounced and universal sinuosity of meandering rivers has been the subject of scientific curiosity among naturalists, geologists and potamologists (river specialists) for many years. This has led to serious study with concomitant hypothesizing as to the scientific explanation for the phenomenon.

These winding, meandering river channels start from the top of the image and run like a fork in the road, splitting to the right and left of the image. At Titan's chilly conditions, streams of methane and/or ethane might flow across parts of the region.

The objective of this project is to develop statistical and mechanistic models for the evolution of meandering rivers. Ancient meandering rivers have played an important role in the formation of some important present day oil reservoirs.

Therefore the rivers of interior Alaska flow thousands of kilometers before arriving at the Bering Sea. The low river gradient results in meandering channels and a broad floodplain.

The geometry of four meandering rivers has been investigated to detect linear and nonlinear links in their planimetry. To this aim, some robust nonlinearity tests—DVS plots, reversibility tests, and the Kaplan test—have been applied to the spatial series of local curvatures.

Many subjects are covered in his writings; fortunately for geologists, meandering rivers is one of them (Einstein 1954). ... I hope that someday soon, Albert Einstein's thoughts on meandering rivers will become recognized within our science.
