I've never seen Mexican feather grass used in mass when it didn't look stunning. (This example is from a garden in Tucson, Arizona designed by Elizabeth Przygoda of Boxhill Landscape Design.) There is just no other ornamental grass quite as blonde and billowy.

Native to the Trans-Pecos, this popular bunchgrass thrives in poor soil and full sun. Mexican Feather Grass has a very fine texture and a seed head that appears as a soft blond haze above the foilage. Each clump lives 2-3 years but leaves 3-5 seedlings in its wake.

This grass moves at the slightest breath of wind and looks choice in combination with Aster frikartii and Sedum 'Autumn Joy'. Mexican feather grass is an exceptional pick for erosion control on sunny slopes. It politely reseeds itself and is not a pest.
