Micrite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Micrite is a sedimentary rock formed of calcareous particles ranging in diameter from 0.06 to 2 mm (0.002 to 0.08 inch) that have been deposited mechanically rather than from solution. The particles,...

Micrite = lime mud; CaCO3, the mineral calcite. Micrite is the equivalent of clay (rock = shale) in clastics. Originally deposited as microscopic aragonite needles, but now converted to calcite and then calcite cemented to form the rock.

Micrite is "lime mud", the dense, dull-looking sediment made of clay sized crystals of CaCO3. Much micrite today forms from the breakdown of calcareous algae skeletons. It is not clear if all ancient micrites formed in the same way.

On the basis of the textural relationships and petrographic characteristics, two types of micrite have been distinguished: micrite 1 and micrite 2. Micrites, as defined by Folk (1962), are characterized by grains smaller than 4 µm, whereas microspar ranges from 4 to 31 µm in size.

The texture of chalk is similar to that of micrite or calcilutite, but chalk is white in colour, less dense, and less compact than micrite. Chalk may be distinguished from other white fine-grained sedimentary rocks (such as kaolinite or diatomite) because it fizzes readily in hydrochloric acid.
