Sphalerite is one of the very few minerals that has a total of six directions of cleavage. If all of them were to be perfectly cleaved on a single crystal it would form a rhombic dodecahedron. Identifying all six directions in a single cleaved crystal is quite difficult due to the multiple twinning and the many directions.

Sphalerite mineral specimens Information and links to specimens for sale ... Sphalerite is a polymorph with two minerals, wurtzite and matraite. The three are called polymorphs. Which means they have the same chemistry, (Zn, Fe)S or zinc iron sulfide. But they have different structures and therefore different shapes.

Sphalerite is one of the sulfide minerals. ... Sphalerite can be found in many ore veins of sulfide minerals, commonly associated with galena and pyrite. Miners call sphalerite "jack," "blackjack," or "zinc blende." Its impurities of gallium, indium and cadmium make sphalerite a major ore of those metals.

Sphalerite is the most important mineral of zinc ore. Pure sphalerite is nearly colorless, but it is commonly brown, yellow, black, or dark red because of impurities. It has a white to dark-brown streak, always lighter than the color of the specimen. ... Read more about sphalerite in Rocks and Minerals of the Ozark Plateau.

Sphalerite (ZnS) is a mineral that is the chief ore of zinc. It consists largely of zinc sulfide in crystalline form but almost always contains variable iron. When iron content is high it is an opaque black variety, marmatite ((Zn,Fe)S).
