Basalt is one of the major igneous rock types. ... Basalt is fine-grained so that the individual minerals are not visible, but they include pyroxene, plagioclase feldspar and olivine. These minerals are visible in the coarse-grained, plutonic version of basalt called gabbro.

It is made of many dark colored minerals such as pyroxene and olivine. Basalt also contains some light colored minerals such as feldspar and quartz, but the amounts are small. Typically, you can't see most of the mineral crystals without using a microscope because quick cooling prevents large crystals from forming.

If olivine is present the rock is called olivine basalt. Microscopic examination show the groundmass to consist of plagioclase (usually labradorite), pyroxene, olivine and magnetite, with a wide range of accessory minerals.

Because the magma comes out of the earth (and often into water) it cools very quickly, and the minerals have very little opportunity to grow. Basalt is commonly very fine grained, and it is nearly impossible to see individual minerals without magnification.
