The modern psychotherapy and self-help movements are now full of such mental exercises. 'Seven steps to happiness', 'Training in the Mind Gym', 'How to Change Your Thoughts' and so on, are really asceticism, in the sense of spiritual exercises, for the masses.

Doing away with peace and prosperity I chanced upon something somewhat similar, yet in a more subtle and inward way. Asceticism. Now, ... Sad to say, I’m not living the life of a true modern day ascetic at the moment. But I’m trying, I’m really trying, and one day, before the end of summer, I hope I’ll succeed.

There has previously been a false definition of asceticism. It was defined as rejection of the world. In fact, asceticism is the ascetic’s rejection of the world of the ascetic. Note that regardless of the type of ascetic, the only true way to cure asceticism is for the ascetic to live in a world which he accepts.
