At the approach of danger, the Montezuma Quail often crouches and freezes rather than flying off. It may sometimes be seen creeping stealthily away, looking more like a rodent than a bird. This bird relishes berries and acorns as well as its winter staples, tubers and bulbs, which it scratches out with its sturdy feet.

Similar Species: A close relative of the Montezuma Quail is the Ocellated Quail, Cyrtonyx ocellatus. They are found in southern Mexico to Honduras, range does not overlap Montezuma Quail. I do not believe that there are any in American or European aviaries.
