A lot of confusing statements are made about the albedo of the moon. The moon is, according to various accounts, "darker than blacktop" or "darker than a black sheet of construction paper." These are oversimplifications - neither blacktop or construction paper have the special characteristics of the moon.

The albedo of the Moon is 0.12. In other words, the Moon reflects back 12% of all the radiation that falls upon it. As you may or may not know, albedo is a ... So, how does the Moon albedo compare to other objects in the Solar System? As bright as the Moon looks from our perspective here on Earth, the Moon's albedo is...

The object with the highest albedo in the Solar System is Saturn's moon Enceladus, with an albedo of 99%. On the other hand, asteroids can have albedos as low as 4%. The Earth's moon has an albedo of about 7%. Can you imagine if we had Enceladus for a moon?

About 50,000 Clementine images have been processed and mosaicked to produce a global map of the Moon's albedo (normalized brightness or reflectivity) at a wavelength of 750 nm. This provides the best albedo map produced to date for most of the far side.

The Moon Is Really A Dark Rock!; The Moon only seems bright against the dark night sky. The Moon only reflects about ten percent of the sunlight falling on it! Can you imagine how bright the Moon would look if it was the planet Venus?

The amount of energy reflected by a surface is called albedo. Albedo is measured on a scale from zero to one (or sometimes as a percent). ... Because much of the land surface and oceans are dark in color, they have a low albedo. They absorb a large amount of the solar energy that gets to them, reflecting only a small...
