Winneshiek was a noted Winnebago chief. His true Indian name was Wau-kon-chaw-koo-kah. He was not very friendly toward the whites, but was popular with his people, and was brave in danger. When he was a boy of fifteen, during hostilities with the whites, he was captured by troops, in Wisconsin.
