Soil mottling (blotchy discloration in the vertical soil profile) is an indication of oxidation, usually attributed to contact with groundwater. With regards to septic systems, I am not sure whether your asking about mottling caused by changing groundwater elevation or by saturation of the soil with septic effluent.
