1. Fuel (gas or diesel depending) ; 2. Air ; 3. Spark ; It sounds like your not getting a good fuel / air balance when you give it gas. Check your fuel filter ... I am no mechanic but i have my share of owning aging cars. ... Your car could be suffering from a case of "bad gas" meaning you probable buy gasoline containing water.

Even when you shift into gear, until you step on the gas, the car feels pretty steady. Once you step on the gas, the car sputters very badly, ... Use a computer and it will give you a code for it. AS many miles as you have on your car you will need a tune up anyways but more then likely it is an intake problem....
