The two most common video standards used are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the video system or standard used in North America and most of South America. In NTSC, 30 frames are transmitted each second. Each frame is made up of 525 individual scan lines.

PAL and NTSC refer to the signalling formats used to transmit video to televisions and other video gear. Because of this the PIC-TV must transmit video in a manner that will be understood by your TV. NTSC video is a signal format developed by the US for television signals and is used primarily in the U.S. and Canada.

Therefore, unless you have special equipment to convert the signal, tapes from North America cannot be played in Europe and vice versa...
