You may have what we call 'hooked' nails. They curve sharply downward as soon as they grow past the free edge. If you look at the nails from the side, are they sharply arched where they rest over the nail bed? In other words, are they highest right in the center of hte nail bed?

Hi, I hate to disagree with FrankB2 but I use this method of shaping my nails. I have the flat nails described in Hyz' website (as well as Tenant's book). The real problem is that flat nails curve downward as they grow out due, I believe, to the sideways pull of the fingernail.
