I'm doing my project and I'm testing rust in nails. I would like to find out where nails would rust faster pure water or in saltwater? and will nails rust in vinegar? ... I build reproduction antique furniture and often need to rust hardware components like brass, iron, steel hinges, nails, tacks, etc. Household bleach works fairly well but often takes 2 or 3 days for an appropriate reaction.

The form of corrosion even under the same exposure conditions is also affected by the chemistry of the metal itself (so make sure you use the same source for the nails). The melted snow at pH 4.5 is slightly acidic, but NaCl is slightly alkaline and would tend to drive the pH upward.
