NAND gate chips are particularly easy to make and are very cheap. So if we can make a circuit that consists of other gates entirely from NAND gates, then we can save a lot on redundancy of our resources. So we use NAND gates as building blocks for circuits.

If you look carefully at the arrangements of the NAND gates, it does not take a genius to see that the two NAND gates are wired as NOT gates, so this set up is also called a NOT gate astable. Let’s have a look at how the circuit works:

NAND gate circuits for other logic gates ... The NAND gates aren't damaged by pressing both switches at the same time. However, since nothing useful happens, circuits which use SET/RESET bistables are designed to avoid the disallowed state.

Logic gate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A logic gate performs a logical operation on one or more logic inputs and produces a single logic output. The logic normally performed is Boolean logic and is most commonly found in digital circuits...

NAND logic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NAND gates are one of the two basic logic gates (along with NOR gates) from which any other logic gates can be built. Due to this property, NAND and NOR gates are sometimes called "universal gates". H...

However, if you are using them to design circuits and investigate logic gates please remember that all unused inputs MUST be connected to the power supply (either +Vs or 0V), ... Logic gates are available on ICs which usually contain several gates of the same type, for example four 2-input NAND gates or three 3-input NAND gates.

Lessons In Electric Circuits, Volume 4, chapter 3: "Logic Gates" ... Although this circuit uses NAND gates instead of NOR gates, its behavior is identical to that of the NOR gate S-R latch (a "high" Set input drives Q "high," and a "high" Reset input drives Q-not "high"), except for the presence of a third input: the Enable.
