A short report on Near-Earth Object (NEO) hazard mitigation strategies was developed in response to a request for information by the U.S. National Research Council's Space Sciences Board on December 17, 2008 and for the Planetary Defense Conference that took place 27-30 April 2009 in Granada Spain.

Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are comets and asteroids that have been nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the Earth's neighborhood.

At both sites the NEAT cameras use 1.2-m (48") telescopes to find Near-Earth objects (NEOs), both Near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) and comets. In April we discovered 5 NEAs: 3 Amors including 1 > 1 km in diameter, and 2 Apollos, both PHAs.

This map is a 2 dimensional projection, and it can look very busy in the vicinity of Earth. To get a better idea of the distribution of objects near the Earth I have a map showing the relative positions of all asteroids currently within 0.3 AU.

Information on Selected Near Earth Objects ... This list shows selected near Earth objects (NEO's) with close approaches to Earth in the past and predicted to the year 2100, as well as other NEO's of interest. The probability of any of these objects hitting the Earth on these approaches is essentially zero.
