Myelin is a dielectric (electrically insulating) material that forms a layer, the myelin sheath , usually around only the axon of a neuron. It is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous...

Axons carry impulses away from the nucleus and towards the dendrite of another neuron. This axon is covered by five sections of "myelin", which are colored green. You can see in the magnified box that the axon is a bundle of little fibers and the myelin is actually wrapped around it several times liked a rolled up carpet.

The myelin sheath (blue) surrounding axons (yellow) is produced by glial cells (Schwann cells in the PNS, oligodendrocytes in the CNS). These cells produce large ... Because the impulse 'jumps' over areas of myelin, an impulse travels much faster along a myelinated neuron than along a non-myelinated neuron.

In the resting neuron, the interior of the axon membrane is ... The axons of many neurons are encased in a fatty sheath called the myelin sheath. It is the greatly expanded plasma membrane of an accessory cell called the Schwann cell. Where the sheath of one Schwann cell meets the next, the axon is unprotected.

A neuron can be defined as a nerve cell. The neuron is often thought of as the "building block" of ... Two other important neuronal structures are the synapse, and the myelin sheath. The synapse is the very small space or gap between adjacent neurons, and, as we will see, many important processes occur in this tiny gap.

The neuron is the functional unit of the nervous system. Humans have about 100 billion neurons in their brain ... Some axons are wrapped in a myelin sheath formed from the plasma membranes of specialized glial cells known as Schwann cells. Schwann cells serve as supportive, nutritive, and service facilities for neurons.

myelinated - A term describing a neuron's axon which is insulated by a myelin sheath to permit saltatory conduction of nerve impulses = action potentials; it is accomplished by either oligodendrocytes in the CNS or neurolemmocytes (Schwann cells) in the PNS.
