The sun (or moon) is not visible through nimbostratus clouds, which distinguishes them from mid-level altostratus clouds. Because of the fog and falling precipitation commonly found beneath and around nimbostratus clouds, the cloud base is typically very diffuse and difficult to accurately determine.

The word Nimbostratus means "rainstorm" and "spread out" in Latin. Rain and snow often accompany the development of nimbostratus clouds. Nimbostratus clouds color the sky a solid gray. These clouds are low altitude clouds that are not more than 5,000 feet above the Earth.

With torn ragged clouds, which develope in the more deeply lying unstable and turbulent layers below the basis of the Nimbostratus due to evaporation of precipitation and which grow together with the Nimbostratus ( “pannus” also applies to Cumulus pannus, Cumulonimbus pannus and Altostratus pannus!)

On a dull day when it rains or snows gently but ceaselessly, the blanket of grey cloud hiding the sun and any higher cloud, is Nimbostratus. Nimbus means rain, and stratus means sheet, so nimbostratus is a sheet cloud from which rain or snow is falling - usually continuously.
