I chose to break this particular norm because I know next to no one in Raleigh, let alone any men. Not that I was ashamed of what I did (well, not after the first few minutes), but any of the other suggested violations would have been difficult.

A norm violation can be determined based solely on the norms of a given group. For example, take the women of Israel. If a woman in that country were to walk out without covering up her face it would represent a huge violation of the norms, and one that is punishable by death.
