The process of sea-floor spreading created the lithosphere under the Atlantic Ocean. As North America and South America moved away from Europe and Africa, the resulting crack was filled by mantle material, which cooled and formed new lithosphere.

The Oldu-vai event can be correlated with a con-sistently appearing minor anomalycalled W. This reassignment gives near-ly uniform spreading rates for sections of the mid-ocean ridge system consid-ere( l here...

The lavas are fresh, "oceanic tholeiites" which were emplaced less than I million years ago by fissure eruptions. These findings, can be explained by the hypothesis of ocean-floor spreading; the basalts are the expression of material originating from the mantle and rising through fissures along the axis of the ridge.

Sandwell outlines the derivation of calculating the ocean floor depth below the ridge using thermodynamics and structural arguments. We provide a very brief outline here and present the relevant equations in the form used by us for our Excel Sea Floor Spreading Activities (Activity I & Activity II)

THE basal sediment layer on the flanks of spreading ridges should be enriched in iron and relatively poor in aluminium if present concepts of ocean floor spreading are correct1,2. Recently published evidence from the third leg of the JOIDES expedition corroborates this hypothesis.
