These changes are usually caused by mountains and valleys on the ocean floor, so gravity maps are useful in revealing the geology of the sea floor. However, gravity is not topography (depth). It is possible to predict depths by combining gravity data with ship surveys of depth.

The surface of the ocean bulges outward and inward mimicking the topography of the ocean floor. The bumps, too small to be seen, can be measured by a radar altimeter aboard a satellite.

The estimation of subsurface structures, such as ocean floor topography, by inversion of surface gravity is described by several authors (e.g. Calmant, 1994, Knudsen, 1993, Smith and Sandwell, 1994, and Tscherning et al., 1994). In this analysis, a simplified approach is followed.

Resolution of mapping the bathymetry of earth's ocean floor is very poor compared to the mapping of the surface of Mars. Water covers 70% of the earth's surface yet, the precision of mapping the ocean floor remains at 25kms on the horizontal scale (Mars = 2kms) and 250 m on the vertical scale (Mars = 1m).
