Keep in mind that it's normal to note a little odor just as the cord is coming off, particularly when the cord becomes soft. If healing is slow and the navel continues to be moist, the raw spot may become lumpy with what's called granulation tissue, but this is nothing to worry about.

Out of four children I only had one in which this occurred. My third son was fine and healthy like my two previous sons but I soon realized something was wrong. My baby's navel had to be infected. It was oozing blood and had a yellowish discharge as well as an awfully foul odor.
