The organ of Corti is the sensitive element in the inner ear and can be thought of as the body's microphone. It is situated on the basilar membrane in one of the three compartments of the Cochlea. It contains four rows of hair cells which protrude from its surface.

Organ of Corti. (Image modified with permission from a drawing by C. Kaiser). Note the single row of inner hair cells and the three rows of outer hair cells. All hair cells (green) have stereocilia; the inner hair cell stereocilia may only touch the tectorial membrane, while the outer hair cell stereocilia are...

In addition, cell-type-specific patterns of p27(Kip1) transcriptional regulation are observed in the mature organ of Corti and retina, suggesting that this mechanism is important in differential regulation of the postmitotic state.

The problem with this postulate is that the electrical source and mechanical load for the electromechanical outer hair cell might be severely attenuated and phase-shifted by the electrical impedance of the cell and the mechanical impedance of the organ of Corti, respectively.

The organ of Corti ... The organ of Corti lies within the middle chamber of the cochlea. It contains thousands of hair cells, which are the actual vibration receptors. The apical surface of the hair cells contains an array of stereocilia, which give the hair cells their name.
