The surprisingly thing lacking from the original Blob movie is, well, the Blob. Other than a few scenes, everything is off-screen and alluded to. The effects are pretty good for their time, like when the blob gets big enough to engulf the movie theatre or restaurant.

These "landmarks" still exist and I have had the Blob on public display at these locations several times over the years for various events. The sequels just don't have the same innocent charm of the original movie.

Don’t you need to have a blob in a movie, in order to call it the Blob? What’s he using instead of a blob, yet still call it the Blob? Wow, an enigma inside a riddle? Oh, and I actually thought Steve McQueen was awesome in the original Blob movie.
