Otto I, surnamed the Great, Holy Roman emperor, eldest son of King Henry I the Fowler by his second wife Matilda, said to be a descendant of the Saxon hero Widukind, was born on the 23rd of November 912. Little is known of his early years, but he probably shared in some of his father's campaigns.
