Among 14 countries analyzed in the report by the National Center for Health Statistics, the percentage of all live unmarried births in the USA — 40% in 2007 — ranks somewhere in the middle. That's up from 18% in 1980. The sharpest rise was from 2002 to 2007, the report found.

A real indicator that the nation and the dominant culture is headed at full steam away from Biblical Christianity or so it would seem. Unfortunately, I would imagine that the statistics for the American Church are only slightly better.

By 1980, more than half of black births were out of wedlock. Today, it's more than two-thirds. And here's something Moynihan did not anticipate. Marriage has declined among white parents, too. White out-of-wedlock births have increased to a rate higher than the one in four that black births reached 40 years ago.

On the other hand, some research suggests that legalizing abortion increases out-of-wedlock births and single parent families, which implies the opposite impact on investments in human capital and thus crime. The question is: what is the net impact?
