Pitched musical instruments are often based on an approximate harmonic oscillator such as a string or a column of air, which oscillates at numerous frequencies simultaneously. At these resonant freque...

To understand how the scale arises from the overtone series, imagine vibrations on a string of fixed length, which is fixed at both ends (e.g. a piano string). The actual vibration may be very complicated, but can be broken down into basic units called "modes" of oscillation, each of which is a sine wave.

When musicians use the term overtone series, they are generally referring to a set of frequency components that appear above a musical tone. The related term harmonic series is a more precisely defined concept with applications in both music and mathematics.

The musical interval defined by C-G is a perfect fifth in just tempering. The overtone series, in fact, defines what is meant by just tempering. This ratio for frequencies determining a fifth was known even before Pythagoras.

Footnote: Tuning to the; Harmonic Overtone Series What are harmonic overtones? ... of that series through 12, where 1 = A0 (55 Hz), with the low A sustaining as a drone for reference. ... of that series, up and back down, with an A2 drone for reference. The series then repeats without the drone, this time sustaining the notes...

Overtone Series/ Position Chart for Trombon ... 1) In any given position, the Overtone Series is an extension of the fundamental pitch. That would be a Bb series in first position, an A series in second, Ab in third, etc.

Here is the overtone series with G as the fundamental. Notice the frequencies of the four G's. The first overtone (200 cps) is also called the second partial or harmonic. The scale degrees are given at right.

In the following examples, fill in the blanks. Each overtone series will ascend to the 10th partial. For instruments that transpose (i.e. french horn, trumpet), write the name of the “sounding pitch” above each note.
